Introducing NOCARIX: Our New Natural Biomolluscicide to Protect Rice Fields

Formulated from Camellia sp. seed extract, NOCARIX is a natural biomolluscicide rich in saponins and specifically developed to combat one of the most destructive pests in rice farming: the apple snail (Pomacea spp.).

This launch marks a new milestone in our commitment to conscious agriculture. NOCARIX has received exceptional authorization from the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food for use in rice crops, following an urgent need to control this invasive species in a way that is both effective and environmentally safe.

Why the Apple Snail Is a Serious Threat

The apple snail is an invasive species originally from South America that has become a major concern for rice farmers across Europe—especially in regions like the Ebro Delta in Spain. For over a decade, its aggressive feeding behavior, high reproductive rate, and adaptability to wet conditions have caused severe damage to rice crops.

In the early stages of rice cultivation, these snails feed on young seedlings, and if not controlled quickly, they can wipe out entire fields, putting farmers’ livelihoods and food production at risk.

A Natural Solution with a Powerful Mode of Action

NOCARIX uses a natural active ingredient: saponins derived from Camellia seeds. These plant-based molecules act as surfactants, disrupting the apple snail’s ability to breathe through its skin. By altering the permeability of its cellular membranes, saponins cause a physiological collapse that leads to the snail’s death.

Unlike synthetic chemicals, this mode of action is both targeted and environmentally friendly, offering a low-impact alternative to conventional molluscicides.
And because it works through a mechanical-physiological process, it also reduces the risk of resistance—an increasingly important factor in pest management strategies.

Responsible Use Under Exceptional Authorization

Due to the urgent need for alternatives to manage this pest without harming aquatic ecosystems, NOCARIX has been granted temporary authorization for use in rice fields under Article 53 of Regulation (EC) No 1107/2009.
This exceptional use is limited to specific periods of the year and subject to regulatory conditions.
